Recently local authorities have been charging schools for an element of the legal costs incurred by the local authority for the conversion process.

The DfE have now recognised that the conversion process has been increasing costs for the local authorities and more recently the schools that are converting. The start-up grant of £25,000 is no longer enough to cover the conversion costs. Successful applications by local authorities will typically be awarded between £35,000 and £65,000. If RSCs feel the local authority has made a very strong case, the grant could be higher. The awards will be announced no later than 25 February 2017. For more information, the application process can be found here (closed 10 February 2017)
