Recent examples include securing funding through ERDF Convergence programmes such as Gap Fund for Buildings, Grant for Business Investment (GBI), and Business Investment for Growth (BIG) as well as from the UK Government’s Growing Places Fund and Regional Growth Fund.
Successful projects include the creation of over 14,500 m2 of additional workspace at Pendennis Shipyard, as well as the refurbishment of the eastern breakwater operated by Falmouth Petroleum. Both projects form a major part of the Port of Falmouth Masterplan, commissioned in 2008 by Cornwall Council.
Other projects include investment in capital equipment by Teagle Machinery to boost new product development, as well as capital equipment for European Springs and Pressings to increase sales into the automotive spares sector.
Friends and Relations, the online book company based at the Tremough Innovation Centre, also benefited from focused IT platform development to significantly grow its product line and service offering.
Redruth based European Springs and Pressings Ltd received an ERDF Convergence grant of almost £300,000 to secure a total investment of £1 million, boosting its production of springs for the automotive sector.
Bishop Fleming worked with European Springs and Pressings to secure the ERDF Grant for Business Investment (GBI) towards the purchase of three new machines to make automotive springs, including a new coiling machine. The EU investment has enabled the project to go ahead and will see the Cornish site increase its capacity to manufacture automotive springs by more than 100%.
In addition to safeguarding jobs, the ERDF investment is also projected to create 15 new positions and increase the Cornish operation’s turnover by 70% over the next three years.
A £600,000 office and factory extension for Cornwall-based Spiral Construction Ltd in Helston was supported by more than £265,000 of ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) Convergence with the rest of the investment coming from the company itself. Safeguarding five existing jobs and creating five more, the support helped Spiral’s planned expansion into new products and markets, and improve production efficiency.
Over the past 25 years Spiral Construction has earned a reputation for quality and excellence. The extra capacity has enabled the company to build on these attributes and stamped its environmental credentials onto its operational processes.
