Revolutionising the future of packaging: A deep dive into Kelpi's mission

3rd November 2023

The 2023 Tech Southwest Awards winners Kelpi is a force of change, deeply committed to addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time - plastic pollution. In a recent conversation with Neil Morris, the CEO of Kelpi, Partner at Bishop Fleming, John Talbot, gained valuable insights into their innovative journey and mission.

What inspired the creation of Kelpi and its mission to revolutionise packaging?

Kelpi's journey began with a simple yet powerful idea - to replace fossil fuel-based plastics with an eco-friendly alternative derived from seaweed. We want to revolutionise packaging by exploring how materials extracted from seaweed could help combat marine pollution. This concept took shape when I encountered a plastic tray containing fish from a supermarket.

We are redefining the future of packaging with a triple-bottom-line approach - considering people, the planet, and profit in equal measure. Our goal is clear: create a product that aligns with environmental sustainability while meeting the demands of consumers and businesses alike.

Can you explain the innovative process behind Kelpi's sustainable packaging solution?

Our breakthrough lies in our patent-pending process, extracting carbohydrates from seaweed to create a thin coating for paper, card, and moulded fibres. This coating provides the necessary waterproofing capabilities, making it a viable replacement for fossil fuel-based plastics. What sets Kelpi apart is not just our innovative technology but also our commitment to marine-safe and compostable materials. Unlike traditional plastics, our solution breaks down naturally within a year, minimising its environmental impact.

What challenges have Kelpi faced in developing sustainable packaging, and how have you overcome them?

Navigating the uncharted waters of sustainable packaging is challenging. Regulatory approvals and scaling up production are hurdles we diligently address. Through strategic funding and collaborations, we have successfully secured investments and partnerships that align with our mission. Moreover, our recognition in global competitions and regional awards serves as a testament to the innovative strides we are making.

What are Kelpi's plans for scaling up and expanding its impact globally?

As we progress towards commercial proof of concept, we focus on amplifying our impact. By collaborating with global brands and businesses, we aim to replace fossil fuel plastic packaging on a massive scale. Regulatory approvals from key jurisdictions like the US, EU, and the UK are underway, paving the way for a global transition to sustainable packaging solutions.
